FRYEBURG – Several agencies were called to Fryeburg on Sunday evening after a Saco River canoeist was briefly thought to be missing.

Ann Perante, administrative assistant at the Fryeburg Police Department, said five canoes capsized, plunging 10 people into the Saco River near Walker’s Rips about 6:30 p.m. One person was thought to be missing, but the group notified police a half-hour later that the person had been found.

Perante said police were also called to assist in recovering a canoe after two canoes with four people capsized on Friday.

“There’s currents that are very difficult to handle when you’re coming down the river,” said Perante.

Perante added that recent high water levels have swept away the canoes of people who camp on the banks of the river, leaving people stranded.

Fryeburg and Bridgton police, as well as Fryeburg Rescue, were called to the scene of Sunday’s incident. Perante said a dive team was also ready to conduct a search.

Deborah Turcotte, spokeswoman for the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, said the Maine Warden Service was also dispatched, but called off after the missing boater was accounted for.

Turcotte advised boaters to wear life jackets and not put themselves at risk in dangerous situations.

“People should use common sense if the water looks too high and it’s moving too fast,” she said.
