LEWISTON – Museum L-A will host a program of games for youth age 8 and older from 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12. The program will begin with a brief tour and introduction to Museum L-A.
Next, there will be a reader’s theater performance by Museum Educator Annette Vance Dorey and Intern Erin Bond. The story is taken from Barbara Greenwood’s book, “Factory Girl.” Through the main character, a young mill worker named Emily, attendees will come to understand the experiences of children in mill towns at the turn of the last century.
Participants also will try their skills and luck on some fun new activities: “GO to the Mill!,” “Who’s Who?” and “Curator Kid.”
“GO to the Mill!” is a strategy card game where players test their memory and familiarize themselves with objects and people connected to textile mill work. The game helps young folks learn about the mills that shaped Lewiston-Auburn’s history.
“Who’s Who?” is a new game designed especially for Museum L-A by Bond, the museum’s education intern from Bates College. Players use deductive reasoning to determine the identity of important people in the history of Lewiston and Auburn and the Industrial Revolution. Children will have fun trying to determine their opponents’ identities before their own is discovered, while also learning about local history.
In “Curator Kid,” participants will don curators’ white gloves and try their hands at accessing and documenting pieces from the museum’s teaching collection. Participants will be able to hold objects from the past and learn about how museums preserve artifacts.
Activities will be followed by snacks and time to explore museum’s new exhibit, “Weaving a World: Lewiston’s Millworkers, 1920-2008.”
Call 333-3881 for more information or to register by Sunday, Aug. 10. The program fee is $5. Parents are welcome to register and participate in the program, but it is not required.
Museum L-A is located at 35 Canal St. in the Bates Mill Complex at the corner of Canal and Chestnut streets.
