NORWAY – Floris M. Monteith, 85, of 42 Alpine St., Norway, died Thursday, Aug. 7, at her home with her family and friends at her side following a four and a half year battle with cancer.

She was born in Palmyra on March 6, 1923, the daughter of Orel and Cora Emery. She worked in Yarmouth at a nursing home and a Bass Shoe shop in Portland. She also worked for 17 years at Butkin Precision Manufacturing in Milford, Conn., as a machine operator. She was the first woman to retire as a machinist.

She moved to Maine in 1985 and loved having yard sales during the summer at her home.

She was a lifetime member of the Floyd A. Harlow Jr. VFW Post No. 9787 in South Paris.

She was loved by all who knew her.

She is survived by her son, Galen R. Farris of Norway; her daughter, Opal Gardner and her husband, Edwin L. of Harrison; her daughter-in-law, Nancy Bates of Milford, Conn.; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her mother in 1977; her father in 1961; her husbands, Dana Bates, Cecil Farris and Ralph Monteith; her children, Malcolm Bates, Warren Farris, Clayton Farris and Richard Bates; her brother, Clifton O. Emery; her twin sister, Doris E. Rowes; and her half brothers, Delmont Estes and Virgil Estes.
