OXFORD – After winning the Strictly Stock championship in 2007, Tommy Tompkins decided to run a part-time schedule this season. He’d done what he set out to do, following in his late father’s footsteps by claiming a track title.

And while he may not have returned to defend his crown, he sure has been fast when he does compete. Tompkins earned his second straight extra-distance victory as he captured the Allen’s Coffee Flavored Brandy 100 on Saturday at Oxford Plains Speedway.

It was his fourth victory of the 2008 season.

“This thing was wrecked last week,” explained Tompkins. “We had rear-end problems, I had a couple guys from RPM Racing Engines along with Jimmy Davis under there, and they got it fixed right. It took a lot of help to be here, and I’m thrilled to win another one of these long races.”

Tompkins, of Carthage, drove underneath B.J. Chapman going into Turn 3 on lap 58 and survived a strong late-race challenge from Auburn’s Mike Short. While Tompkins played defense, Short did everything possible to get by, but settled for second.

Points leader Skip Tripp padded his lead with a solid third-place run, while father and son combo of Larry and Zach Emerson completed the top five.

Only nine of the 16 starters finished on the lead lap. Tompkins’ margin of victory was two-tenths of a second, enough to secure the win and the big trophy. Finishing sixth through 10th was Matt Williams, Sumner Sessions, Chris Burgess, Shane Green and Mike Roe. With three races remaining, the 2008 title is close enough to taste for Tripp.

Debbie Marston, Addison Bowie, Nik Coates, Steve Barker and Travis Stearns were also feature winners.

In earlier feature action, Marston notched her second Ladies’ division victory of 2008 in convincing fashion. The Hartford resident drove outside of Deanna Robertson on lap 11 to take command and pulled away from the field during the final nine circuits. Vanna Brackett started seventh and steadily powered her way to second at the finish, while Robertson settled for third. Auburn’s Lisa Brooks ran second for 10 laps before fading to fourth, while Kim Sessions completed the top five.

Bowie registered his first victory of the season in the first of two 20-lap tilts for the Outlaw division. The Auburn native led wire-to-wire in a caution-free affair after starting on the outside of Row 1. Fellow Auburn driver John Spencer Jr. came from fourth to claim second, while Norway’s David Smith finished third. Kevin Leighton kept an aggressive Fred Clavet behind him, as the two finished fourth and fifth. After two crash-filled qualifying heats from the Late Models, this was a refreshing change of pace.

Coates recorded his fourth win of 2008 in the second Outlaw contest. The Turner driver took the lead from Gerry Richard on lap eight and hung on for top honors. Dan Brown made a strong late-race challenge, but settled for second, while Richard was third. John Patria and Tom Averill completed the top five.

Barker broke a multi-year winless streak with a strong performance in the Allen’s Mini Stock division. The Jay driver took the lead from Matt Moore on lap 19. Shane Kaherl was the big story in this one, coming from the rear to place second after he spun out while leading at lap 15. Moore settled for third, while Ashley Marshall and Bill Thibeault were fourth and fifth.

Stearns picked up his second victory of the season in the Late Models. The Auburn native took the lead from Nick Brown on lap three and held off Donnie Wentworth for the checkered flag. Defending champion Travis Adams got his car dialed in, wheeling his way all the way up from 13th on the starting grid to claim third. Two-time Late Model champion Dennis Spencer Jr. was on a rail with Conrad Childs’ No. 96 entry, dogging Stearns early on before settling for fourth.

Shawn Martin drove hard to keep Adams within sight as the two drivers battle for the 2008 track title. Martin suffered front-end damage during qualifying, but his crew repaired the car in time for the feature.

The 2004 champion started 12th and steadily worked his way into contention, claiming fifth place on what could have been a costly night in that points chase.
