FARMINGTON – It’s not too late to start composting. Late summer and fall are ideal to prepare the garden or outside plants by adding as many nutrients as possible to keep them strong for the approaching winter.

This year, Franklin County Soil and Water Conservation District is offering compost bins for a late summer pick-up. The 30-inch x 35-inch bins, a wingdigger to make turning easier and kitchen scrap pail are available for $75 plus tax.

Orders must be received by Friday, Aug. 22. They can be picked up from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Aug. 27, at the USDA Service Center, 107 Park St.

The district will have blueberry and raspberry bushes along with fruit trees available for next May’s annual shrub sale. Those wishing can reserve their order for next year, with payment due Jan. 15, 2009. Planning the compost for the berry patch can go hand in hand for next spring.

For more information about the shrub sale or compost bins, contact the district at [email protected], or call 778-4279 and ask for Rosetta or BJ.
