LEWISTON – Jonathan LaBonte, executive director for the Androscoggin Land Trust, will address the Lewiston-Auburn Rotary Club at noon Thursday, Aug. 14, at the Ramada Inn.

The presentation will highlight the work of the Androscoggin Land Trust along the river and how support from area businesses and groups is critical in helping advance efforts. The Androscoggin River is experiencing a rebirth as continued investments in water quality improvements have opened opportunities for recreation and economic development along its shores.

Several initiatives, including the proposed development of a major regional park on the corridor between Turner, Leeds and Greene and Lewiston/Auburn, have the potential to create new business opportunities and a draw for residents in the communities.

LaBonte was raised in Auburn and graduated from St. Dominic Regional High School High School. He attended the University of Maine in Orono, earning a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering.

After pursuing engineering in Boston for several years, LaBonte returned to Maine to focus on graduate studies in planning and public policy. He spent two years with the Maine Turnpike Authority as assistant government relations manager before becoming executive director of the land trust.

In a volunteer capacity, he serves as chairman of YPLAA, the Androscoggin County Chamber’s young professional group, and on numerous boards and committees in Auburn, including the Joint Downtown Master Plan Committee.

The Lewiston-Auburn Rotary club meets every Thursday at the Ramada. Lunch is $8 a person. Registration is not required. For more information on the local Rotary, go to www.lewistonauburnrotary.org.
