DEER ISLE – Robert R. Saindon, 88, of 249 Seventh St., Auburn, died Saturday, Aug. 9, at the Island Nursing Home with his family by his side.
He was born in Lewiston, Oct. 16, 1919, the son of Roland and Blanche (Lambert) Saindon. He attended schools in Lewiston and graduated from Lewiston High School, Class of 1938.
He was a U.S. Navy chief petty officer having served his country during World War II.
Following his service, he worked as a sales representative for John Hancock Insurance for many years. In 1961, he went to work as a counselor and later became manager for the Maine State Employment Security Commission in Augusta and in Lewiston.
He received many recognition awards, which included his long, faithful and outstanding service in appreciation in the Employment Security Commission, which was awarded by the commissioner in 1976, his outstanding public service support in Air Force Recruiting in 1978, his contribution in establishing digital electronics in 1979, his meritorious service in connection with the Job Matching Committee by his untiring efforts and ability, he continuously worked to promote and improve the Job Matching System in 1982, and was recognized by Gov. Brennan in appreciation of more than 20 years of dedicated service with the Department of Labor.
He was a longtime member of St. Louis Church, where he volunteered on the restoration committee and the Lewiston Elks Lodge, where he was exalted ruler. He also volunteered his service at Central Maine Medical Center.
He enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing at his camp on Millinocket Lake, helping Boy Scout Troop 117, and especially square dancing with his wife.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Muriel (Denis) Saindon, whom he married on Sept. 26, 1945; his son, Richard Saindon and his wife, Sharon, of Turner; their daughter, Tammy Kelly and her son, Parker Kelly, both of Bangor; his son, Dennis Saindon and his son, Luke Saindon, both of Deer Isle.
