PORTLAND (AP) – The coach of Deering High School’s state championship baseball team has resigned.

Mike D’Andrea’s resignation was confirmed Tuesday by Principal Ken Kunin, who said D’Andrea also stepped down as girls basketball coach but will remain as a physical education teacher.

D’Andrea has been a coach at the Portland school since 1997.

His resignation comes little more than a week after three assistants were fired amid allegations of underage drinking at a victory party for the team in June.

Among those fired was D’Andrea’s son, Michael D’Andrea Jr.

The elder D’Andrea has said he was not at the party, which was allegedly held at the home of an assistant coach.
