LIVERMORE FALLS – What started out as a report of young people smoking an illegal substance behind a church Saturday night turned into a scuffle with police.
One police officer was hurt and another was kicked during the scuffle. One person was arrested.
Juan Colon, 18, of Livermore Falls was arrested on charges of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, police Chief Ernest Steward Jr. said Monday.
Police responded to the parking lot beside the Livermore Falls Church of the Nazarene at Wheeler and Baldwin streets about 8:30 p.m. Saturday.
Officers talked to two juveniles and then went over to a white vehicle that had four juveniles inside it, Steward said. Police talked to them and there was nothing suspicious and they let them go, he said.
They got information later that the four juveniles in the vehicle had drug paraphernalia, the chief said.
Police went to talk to the juveniles, who had moved on to a 16 Knapp St. residence. The teenage owner of the vehicle voluntarily consented to it being searched, he said.
Everything was going fine until a juvenile male came from behind the house while the search was ongoing. He was being loud, and police tried to calm him down, Steward said.
Colon and another juvenile also came up to police and started acting aggressively, he said.
Soon, officer Steve Allen was surrounded by juveniles, a couple of them being aggressive. Allen pushed them away and pulled out his Taser, Steward said.
At that time, officer Tom Plourde was trying to arrest Colon, and Allen went to help him. Allen was kicked away, and when he got back up he went back in to assist Plourde.
They got Colon arrested but he continued to act out, so instead of detaining him at the police station here, they ended up taking him to Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn, Steward said.
Police seized as evidence a pipe used for smoking marijuana after it was given to an officer.
After the incident Plourde went to the hospital to be checked out because he had injured his shoulder during the scuffle. Allen did not know who had kicked him and so no one was charged at the time.
An hour later, Allen and Jay officer Mike Mejia responded to a report of juveniles fighting on Knapp Street.
A 17-year-old Livermore Falls girl was arrested on a charge of disorderly conduct and was released to a parent, Steward said.
