PORTLAND (AP) – Members of the public get their chance Tuesday evening to view the final proposals in a competition to paint designs on huge oil tanks in South Portland.

The nonprofit Maine Center for Creativity received more than 500 submissions for a design to be painted on the tops of 16 Sprague Energy oil tanks and on the sides of eight of them. The $1.2 million project will require 4,500 gallons of paint that will cover 261,000 square feet of surface.

The entries have been winnowed to five, and their creators will be in South Portland to present the designs. The artists will show off the designs again on Thursday, this time in Rockland.
