Back when most of us were just a glint in our parents’ eyes, Harvey Lord of South Paris was jumping into foxholes in Europe to defend our country, our freedom and the American way of life from evil people bent on taking over the world. A World War II veteran, Lord is a good friend of mine, and a patriot in every true sense of the word.
But he was recently arrested in South Paris for peaceably petitioning his fellow citizens – one of the rights in our Constitution that he, and so many others through the years, have fought to defend and preserve.
The post office says he can’t circulate his petition on their property, as if it’s private property. I don’t think so. The post office is funded by taxpayers, and in many ways is a part of the town square.
The Supreme Court seems to think that the burning of the American flag is protected political speech, yet the post office isn’t going to let people petition one another on public property?
What is this country coming to?
