BOSTON (AP) – The state Department of Public Health is broadly expanding its recall of a ready-to-eat tuna salad that may be contaminated with listeriosis-causing bacteria.

Consumers are asked to throw out any deli-prepared tuna salad sold between July 26 to August 10, due to a possible contamination of listeria in tuna salad manufactured by Home Made Brand Foods in Newburyport.

Symptoms of listeriosis include fever, muscle aches, fatigue, and sometimes cramping or diarrhea.

Mice key reason for plane crash

TORRINGTON, Conn. (AP) – A Torrington man says he’s been told that mice brought down his small plane that crashed into a river in Rhode Island last week.

Forty-two-year-old Danny Hall was flying a 1968 single-engine Cessna that crashed into the Pawcatuck River on Aug. 2 after the engine failed about two miles from Westerly Airport.

Hall says a Federal Aviation Administration investigation found that mice had built a nest in the plane and when he pulled a device that prevents icing, the mice and their nest were sucked into the carburetor, causing the engine to seize up.

Man shoots black bear in backyard

NEW MILFORD, Conn. (AP) – State officials say a New Milford homeowner shot and killed a bear in his yard because the animal appeared to be threatening him and his dog.

The state Department of Environmental Protection ruled Wednesday morning’s shooting justified because the man was in potential danger, and that no criminal charges will be pursued.

The man says he shot the bear when it stood on its hind legs and started toward him after encountering his sheepdog.

The black bear, which weighed between 150 and 200 pounds, had two cubs in a tree on the man’s property.

DEP officials say black bears usually are not confrontational. This bear may have become agitated if the dog was between her and the cubs, or between her and a nearby bird feeder.
