BOSTON (AP) – Transit police have arrested a MBTA worker for allegedly stealing fares from so-called “drop boxes.”

The boxes are used to speed fare collections during events that draw large crowds like those at Red Sox games.

Investigators say they conducted a sting operation, placing marked currency into the fare boxes Saturday night at the Fenway and Kenmore Stations. When the contents of the boxes were audited early Sunday, all but one of the marked bills were missing.

Police arrested 43-year-old Gilberto Carrasquillo, a 22-year employee of the MBTA, after questioning him. Carrasquillo had transported the drop boxes from the stations to the MBTA vault.

Carrasquillo will be arraigned Monday at Boston Municipal Court on a charge of larceny over $250.
