MASHPEE, Mass. (AP) – A second Mashpee soldier has died in a week in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The Cape Cod Times reported Sunday that Army Pfc. Paul Conlon died Friday morning in Afghanistan when a roadside bomb blew up his vehicle.

His mother, Maria, says the 21-year-old Conlon died instantaneously.

Conlon was the second combat death from the Upper Cape town last week.

Ninenteen-years-old Marine Pfc. Daniel McGuire was killed Thursday in Fallujah, Iraq.

Conlon was a 2005 graduate of Mashpee High School who loved poetry. His mother said his writing ability earned her son a generous scholarship to Franklin Pierce University in New Hampshire.
