This is in response to Dean Salvadaena’s letter Aug. 9 regarding the American flags inappropriately displayed at the Veterans Memorial Park in Lewiston.
He appears to understand the purpose of the park, however, he lacks the understanding of the American flag.
The flag is a symbol; a patriotic symbol and not a memorial symbol.
The U.S. Flag Code prescribes numerous ways to use and appropriately display the American flag, which is not limited to memorial services, cemeteries or government buildings. Displaying the small flags at the surrounding area at the Veterans Memorial Park is a patriotic gesture of respect, appropriately recognizing all who served in the Armed Forces, living or deceased.
I sincerely hope that the L&A Veterans Council will not be unduly influenced by Salvadaena’s misinterpretation of the American flags symbolically and appropriately displayed.
