AUBURN- Traffic on Center Street was rerouted Monday after a tractor-trailer struck a utility pole, causing an electrified line to fall into the street. No injuries were reported.

Robert Boonen of Parsonsfield was driving the rig out of the Cumberland Farms parking lot shortly after 5:30 p.m. when it struck the metal wire that supports the utility pole there.

According to Sgt. Eric Audette, witnesses saw Boonen get out of his truck, inspect the damage, then get back in and proceed south on Center Street.

Though the utility pole was intact, the snapped support wire caused a live line running from the top of the pole to come loose. The line fell onto the street in the northbound lane, directly in front of the VIP parking lot.

T.J. Harmon of Mechanic Falls, who works at Cumberland Farms, did not see the initial incident, but said he realized something was wrong when traffic had stopped along the street. He noticed traffic coming into the Cumberland Farms parking lot shortly after the incident.

Police redirected some particularly large vehicles into the parking lot in front of Cumberland Farms, away from a perimeter set up around the live line. Northbound traffic was rerouted mainly down North River Road, while a Coburn Street detour was established for southbound traffic. Four police vehicles, two at the entrance to the Center Street Plaza and two at Coburn St. were on hand to assist with traffic.

Two fire department trucks were parked above and below the wire to close off the area. An Auburn Public Works truck was also on hand.

By 6:15 p.m., CMP had repaired the line and traffic was moving in both lanes. The damage was estimated at $2,000.

Boonen was summoned after being stopped by police on Washington Street.
