MARSHFIELD, Mass.- An 18-year-old carnival worker from Oxford, Maine, is charged with raping two girls, ages 13 and 14, after meeting them at the Marshfield Fair.
Jeffrey Witham, at a hearing in Plymouth District Court on Monday, pleaded not guilty to two counts of rape, indecent assault and battery, indecent assault and battery on a person under 14, kidnapping and assault and battery, the Patriot Ledger of Quincy reported.
Witham, of 100 Fore St., Oxford, is a ride operator for Fiesta Shows, which runs traveling carnivals across New England and has been operating at the Marshfield Fair since Friday.
Police told the Patriot Ledger that Witham exchanged phone numbers with two girls, whom he met at the carnival Saturday.
That evening, Witham went to the home of one of the girls.
When Witham arrived, the two girls were at the house alone, police said.
Witham sexually assaulted one of the girls in the living room, before taking the second girl into a bedroom where he raped her, police said. He then raped the second girl, they said.
When the girls ran from the house, Witham allegedly chased one and attempted to drag her into the woods. The girls were able to escape and one contacted her father who called the police, according to the Patriot Ledger.
The police arrested Witham a short time later near the house. Witham matches the description given by the girls of their attacker, the story reported.
The judge overseeing the arraignment, Ronald Moynahan, reportedly asked prosecuters how Witham obtained the girl’s address. He also asked why one of the girls did not call the police while the other was being assaulted.
Prosecutor Jessica Healy was unable to answer those questions based on the police report, according to the Patriot Ledger.
Witham works to support his girlfriend and their 5-month-old baby, Witham’s public defender Kathleen Iaccarino said. She also said that he is one of seven children and lives with his grandmother.
Witham was released on a $150,000 bail. His case will resume Sept. 5.
Fiesta Shows told the Patriot Ledger that it does background checks on all its employees and that Witham did not have a criminal record when hired.
