LEWISTON – At noon on Saturday, Aug. 23, guitar students from Carroll’s Music Center will give a free recital at The Maple Room.

Not a typical recital, the young musicians will play lead guitar with a back-up band performing songs of their own choosing. Selections are varied and include Led Zeppelin, ZZ Top, the Ramones, Cream, Greenday and Veruca Salt.

The students, ages 12-14, are studying with local guitarist Alexander Adams, who has been teaching in the Lewiston area for four years. “I want these students to get up on stage because I am proud of what they’ve accomplished in their time taking lessons. I believe that learning an instrument without the opportunity to perform is like learning to play football but never having a game,” said Adams. “Performance is essential to playing guitar, and one of the problems with being a young musician is connecting with people and a place to play.”

The back-up band is made up of college musicians. “I want to let these kids be guitar heroes for real,” said Adams.

The Maple Room is at 22 Park St. For more information, log on to www.themapleroom.info or www.carrollsmusic.com, or call Adams at 657-6649.
