WINSLOW – The Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office says investigators think a 23-year-old man used a lighter to ignite a flammable liquid inside his car and start a fire that killed him.
Authorities say the car was parked at Pleau’s Market in Winslow when it burst into flames about 8:15 p.m. Monday night. After firefighters put out the fire, a body tentatively identified as Shane Rexford of Palermo was found in the driver’s seat.
The car was taken to the state police crime lab in Augusta so lab personnel could remove the body, which was burned beyond recognition.
Investigators say Rexford had purchased two lighters at the nearby Cumberland Farms store moments before the fire.
