AUBURN – George C. Gibbs, of Woodstock, died Aug. 18, in Auburn.

The youngest son of James and Ethel Morrill Gibbs was born Feb. 11, 1925. He was a “cradle roll member” of the North Paris Federated Church. He attended North Paris Grade School, West Paris High School, and graduated from the University of Southern Maine.

He served his country during World War II and the Korean War. He was in the Normandy Invasion and also served later in the Pacific area. He served as president of the North Paris Community Club and the North Paris School Improvement League.

He was a charter member of the Ring-McKeen American Legion Post and served as post commander twice and adjutant. He was Oxford County adjutant and vice-commander. He was a member of the West Paris Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the MSAD 17 school board. He created the forestry course for Region 11 at Oxford Hills and taught the course for 20 years.

His granddaughter Laurie brought her family from Florida to visit him twice in recent months. He was a member of the Locke Mills Union Church and served as a deacon and treasurer for several years. Previously he had served as moderator of the Mission Congregational Church in West Paris.

He was active in the Oxford County Retired Teachers Association.

He loved his family dearly and devoted himself to them. Kevin Gibbs was very dedicated to his father, taking care of the yard and garden, clearing the snow, mowing the lawns and doing other tasks around the home.

He married Elizabeth Truth Abbott. After her death, he married Zylpha Emmons. They had five stepchildren, Joan Bartlett and husband, David, Susan McIsaac and husband, Harry, Joy Sumner and husband, Floyd, Pam Herbert and husband, Joe, Tena Perron and husband, Bruce. They had several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. His granddaughters Becky Richards and Rachel Abbott, along with his stepdaughters, Pam Herbert and Susan McIsaac helped him through his illness.

He is survived by a son, Kevin George Gibbs; stepchildren, Naomi Lary and Rodney Abbott and his wife, Lois Sumner Abbott.

He was predeceased by his mother and father; his brothers, William and John; and his sisters, Madelyn Herrick, Ethelyn Ryerson and Ora Ryerson.
