FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) – Taylor Twellman scored one goal and assisted on another as the New England Revolution ended an MLS drought against D.C. United with a 2-1 win at Gillette Stadium.

New England (11-6-3) beat its Eastern Conference rival for the first time since the 2006 Eastern Conference finals on Oct. 6, 2006, a span of two loss and two ties. D.C. (9-10-1) fell below .500 and finished its three-game road trip 1-2.

Reserve goal keeper Doug Warren allowed one goal but came up with a big save late to help the Revolution regain possession of first place in the Eastern Conference by two points over Columbus. New England has 36 points while Columbus stands in second place with 34.

The scoring began in the 24th minute as New Englands Khano Smith raced down the left side and fed to Adam Cristman in front of United keeper Louis Crayton. Cristman redirected to an unguarded Twellman, who sent the loose ball into the net for his third goal of the season.

Twellman assisted on New England’s second tally early in the second half when he fed Jeff Larentowicz 25 yards out. Larentowicz drilled a line shot past Crayton in the 49th minute for a 2-0 New England lead.

Twellman missed 14 games earlier in the MLS season due to knee, ankle and hip injuries.

The United did not record their first shot on goal until the 60th minute. D.C. captain Jaime Moreno made it a one-goal game.

United striker Santino Quaranta had a chance to tie in the 74th minute but Warren easily stopped the shot.
