JAY – Schools in Franklin County and northern Androscoggin County are ready to open next week.
Jay High School freshmen were introduced to their new Principal Joe Moore and their new school on Wednesday during orientation.
School for all students attending Jay schools starts at 7:50 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26, at the high school; at 7:40 a.m. at middle school; and 9 a.m. elementary school.
Superintendent Robert Wall, who also was in attendance for freshmen orientation, said that this year ninth-graders will have one-on-one laptop computers to work on.
“We have fine-tuned our technology system and it is top-notch,” Wall said.
Freshman Ashley Dorey of Jay said she is looking forward “to more freedom” at the high school than what she had at the middle school.
Over in SAD 36 in Livermore and Livermore Falls, the district has returned to single-run bus transportation with all students attending school from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
School opens for students in kindergarten through grade six, and the ninth grade on Tuesday, Aug. 26. This allows sixth-graders and freshmen to be in their new schools by themselves with staff, with all students attending on Wednesday, Aug. 27.
There will be teams of two teachers teaching at the sixth-grade and seventh-grade levels this year with a four-day rotation schedule. Each teacher in the team will teach two core subjects and literacy. Each unified arts class will be taught on a three-week rotation schedule to keep students interested in what they are doing.
In the Farmington-Wilton area, SAD 9 schools begin for grades kindergarten through ninth on Wednesday, Aug. 27. All students are scheduled to attend on Thursday, Aug. 28.
Weld students will be traveling a little longer on the school bus as they are to attend Wilton schools this year. As of early August, 13 students from that town were scheduled to attend Academy Hill School on Route 156, about 14 miles away.
SAD 9’s full-paid prices for breakfast and lunch have increased this year: Breakfast price is $1 at elementary schools and lunch price is $1.75, and at the middle and high schools breakfast is $1.15 and lunch is $2.
Reduced lunch and breakfast prices remain the same at 40 cents and 30 cents, respectively.
In the Kingfield-Phillips area, SAD 58 classes start for grades kindergarten through ninth grade on Wednesday, Aug. 27, with all students scheduled to attend Thursday, Aug. 28.
Teachers have workshops Monday and Tuesday.
Some schools in the district already have items posted on the www.msad58.org Web site.
Under the Kingfield School bulletin, it announces that the bell rings at the school at 7:55 a.m. for grades kindergarten through fourth, and 8 a.m. for students in grades five through eight. The first day of school lunch is popcorn chicken, french fires, corn and fresh fruit.
The Strong School bulletin on the Web site has a list of materials for students to bring to school at each grade level.
“All students should bring a smile and a ‘can do attitude’ to each of their classes on Aug. 27th at the Strong School, ‘Where the best get better,'” the site states.
At the Rangeley Lakes Regional School students begin classes on Wednesday, Aug. 27.
The doors open at 7:30 a.m. with home room starting for middle and high school students at 7:45 a.m., and kindergarten-through-fifth-grade at 7:55 a.m.
Teachers will be in workshops on Monday and Tuesday.
High school students will each have a computer to use, Superintendent Phil Richardson said.
