EAST LYME, Conn. (AP) – East Lyme students will soon be hoofing it a few extra blocks to catch the school bus, part of a plan to save thousands in gasoline costs.

The school district is cutting almost 200 bus stops from its daily routes, saying a consultant estimated they could save up to $10,000 in fuel costs.

The change affects students in all grades from kindergarten through high school in the southeastern Connecticut town.

Superintendent Paul Smotas says reducing the number of stops cuts down the buses’ total travel time, which in turn cuts down on gasoline.

Authorities say about two dozen parents had called with questions or concerns as of Friday, while the president of the middle school’s PTA says she hasn’t heard concerns from anyone yet.
