POLAND – Poland Regional High School has received a $7,500 grant from the Spirer-Leitzer Children’s Fund through the Maine Community Foundation. The grant will allow school officials to continue offering the popular Gran Turismo of Colleges to interested high school juniors in the spring.
Over the past five years, PRHS has been able to bring approximately 200 students to visit college campuses. Guidance Counselor Carrie Mrowka and Dean of Students Ray Lafreniere plan the annual excursion, which typically lasts three days and two nights, touring seven campuses.
Many students in the three towns served by PRHS are first generation college applicants and the tour affords them an opportunity to visit campuses around New England. The grant will also fund continued campus visits to in-state schools.
As a requirement for graduation, all PRHS students must apply to college and the school reports that 86 percent of the Class of 2008 has pursued post-secondary educational options.
