The Bobs
During the golf season, the octogenarian duo of Bob Labrie, 83, of Auburn and Bob Allen, 81, of Lewiston meet every morning like a pair of Swiss watches at 7 a.m. sharp for what has become a ritual. The Bobs, as they are affectionately known by the staff at Pine Acres Golf Course in Auburn (formerly Roy’s Par 3), lace up their L.L. Bean duck boots while the morning light casts their long shadows in the dew-laden grass. The two met four years ago when Allen decided to take up golf at the age of 77. Labrie, an experienced golfer, offered to become his teacher, and the two have been walking the course ever since. The Bobs say they get along great because they share a work ethic, and being punctual is important to them. “We like to be on time even when we play,” they said. Allen and Labrie prefer to walk the course. “We are still too young to ride one of those golf buggies.” Labrie retired from the shoe industry and Allen from the department of the Navy.
