DURHAM – A 29-year old Pownal man, Nicholas Lewis, of Tuttle Road, remained in the Androscoggin County Jail on Monday where he is being held on charges following a single vehicle crash on Stackpole Road Sunday night. Bail is set at $540, a jail spokeswoman said.
Lewis was arrested Sunday night by Androscoggin County Sheriff Sgt. Rielly Bryant on charges of operating under the influence, operating after suspension, leaving the scene of a property damage accident, and failure to report an accident by the quickest means.
According to Bryant, Lewis was driving on Stackpole Road near the Bowie Hill Road intersection when he lost control of his car, which rolled over and landed on it’s roof.
Lewis fled on foot into nearby woods, Bryant said. With the aid of Auburn Police Department’s canine unit’s Inka and his handler Officer Scott Corey, Lewis was tracked nearly three-quarters of a mile through the woods before being apprehended about a half-hour later.
Lewis escaped injury. The 2001 Ford Focus he was driving, owned by his grandmother, Alice Lewis, of Pownal, was demolished.
Loss was estimated at between $6,000 and $7,000 in the 6:58 p.m. crash.
