Reader Jack Milo called Monday with another historical note about the McDonald’s in Lewiston:
It brought Joe Graziano to Maine in 1966.
Graziano was the first manager of the restaurant on Lisbon Street. Right after his McDonald’s years, Graziano opened his iconic Graziano’s Casa Mia in Lisbon in 1969.
He was chairman of the state’s athletic commission and is credited as the one-man revival for boxing in the Twin Cities. Joey Gamache Jr. has said, “If it wasn’t for Joe Graziano, my career might not have gone as well as it did.”
(Graziano not only inspired athletes. Lewiston City Administrator Jim Bennett’s clownish alter-ego, Ginjo, was half-named for Graziano, as a tribute.)
It seems the historical legacy of the Lewiston McDonald’s is only growing.
