AUGUSTA (AP) – A Maine Senate candidate has been ordered to repay $2,000 to the Maine Clean Election Act fund for purchases made with public money.

The state ethics commission ruled Dana Kadey’s expenses for a truck cap and roof rack, a Global Positioning System and a plug-in cooler were not campaign related.

The independent Senate candidate from Princeton says he feared he would’ve been violating the law by spending his own money on the items. Candidates who utilize clean election funding cannot spend any of their own money on campaign expenses.

So far, Kadey has received $21,005 in clean election money. He faces two opponents: Republican Sen. Kevin Raye of Perry and Democrat Karen Johnson of Machias.
