President George W. Bush has proclaimed September as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. Here in Maine, Gov. John Baldacci has done the same.
I was diagnosed with prostate cancer in the fall of 2000. The diagnosis was made as a result of my annual routine physical with my primary care physician. I feel strongly that without the early detection, I would not be alive today.
With the early detection and subsequent treatment, I have been able to live a full, normal life. I have seen two more of my children get married and have welcomed more grandchildren into the family. I have been able to travel with my wife and enjoy what life has to offer. Without the early detection and treatment, I might be dead.
Men should insist upon regular PSA and DRE testing for prostate cancer. The tests are simple and could save a life. I know that it saved mine.
People should not think that it cannot happen – one out of every six men nationwide will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. Take the time to get tested.
