JAY – A Jay woman was in critical condition Friday night after an empty dump truck ran over her leg at the Verso Paper mill yard Friday morning, officials said.
Tina Dolloff, 37, an employee of SW&B Construction Co. of Auburn, was flown by a medical helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, Jay police Sgt. Troy Young said. A nursing supervisor said her condition was listed as critical late Friday night.
Verso Paper truck driver Paul Despres, 50 of Jay was turning right in preparation to back up beside another truck. Despres did not see Dolloff walking in front of the truck, Young said.
The right front tire of the truck ran over her left leg, Young said.
Dolloff suffered injuries to her foot, leg and hip, he said.
Young and Detective Drew Hufnagel responded to the accident in the area of the pulp yard. Jay firefighters were called to mark off a landing zone in the mill’s parking lot for the helicopter.
“We acknowledge there was an accident and a woman was injured,” Verso spokesman Bill Cohen said. “As a precaution they felt it was necessary to LifeFlight her” to a hospital.
Mill first responders responded to the scene of the incident reported at 10:07 a.m. to police, and a NorthStar ambulance arrived shortly after. The ambulance brought Dolloff to the Verso parking lot, where she was transferred to LifeFlight, who airlifted her to CMMC.
“For the sake of employees and our contractor privacy and safety, we wouldn’t say anymore,” Cohen said.
All calls on the accident in the afternoon were referred by police to the mill. The company conducted an investigation on the incident.
