LEWISTON – Raymond J. Spencer, 99, a longtime resident of 1395 Sabattus St., died Wednesday, Sept. 3, at Marshwood Nursing Home.

He was born in Brockton, Mass., on July 22, 1909, the son of Edward and Mary Spencer. He grew up and attended schools in Lewiston and was a graduate of Jordan High School, Class of 1927.

On Sept. 4, 1933, he married Diane Guay. She died on Nov. 18, 2002.

He was employed by Bates Manufacturing for 30 years and during that time he also worked for John’s Outboard Motors for 16 years. He also worked part time for Robert Hall Clothing Store for 14 years.

Ray served as a volunteer income tax preparer for the IRS and the AARP for more than 20 years. For several years, he was a member of the advisory council of the Western Maine Area Agency on Aging now known as SeniorsPlus.

He was well-known in figure skating circles having participated in amateur ice shows for more than 20 years as an ice dancer and a teacher.

In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and was an avid golfer.

He is survived by his two sons, Raymond and his wife, J. Louise, of Portland and Paul and his wife, Maureen, of Lewiston; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Besides his wife, he was predeceased by his sister, Mary Louise Verrill; and his brother, Edward Spencer.
