I was very interested in the article (Aug. 19) about volunteers at the food bank. I found something desperately wrong, even wondered if the real meaning had been misprinted. I thought I read that the volunteers did not get free food, but the recipients (non-workers) got the free food, with no work involved.

There is something wrong with that scenario.

I know that the managers at the food bank would be more knowledgable in running a business.

I noticed an 80-year-old woman helping by volunteering. She is probably turning her heat down to save oil bills and watching how she spends her money. I wonder how she feels when she sees people from a younger generation coming in to get food when they have a capable body and could earn their food as she did.

I am surprised the managers have not come up with a so-simple solution: Have the recipients of the food work four hours for their food. I am sure if they had to sign in each week there would be more than enough volunteers.

There must be a lot of people getting the food. Think of all the help there would be.
