LEWISTON – Two women were hurt Friday afternoon when cars collided at Pine and Webster streets, sending one car flipping into a utility truck before landing upside down on a sidewalk.

Inside the overturned car, 41-year-old Michelle Berube remained conscious but suffered a variety of injuries.

Her Mitsubishi came to rest on its roof up against a Morrison Hall Interiors truck parked at the curb.

“I ran over to the car and told her, ‘Don’t move. Stay where you are. Help is on the way,'” said LouAnn Faletra, who lives near the intersection.

“She was coherent. She’s lucky. I thought she was going to be a lot worse off.”

Several witnesses said Berube was driving on Pine Street and passing through a green light when her car was struck by the other vehicle.

That car, a Pontiac, was driven by 23-year-old Patricia Kemp, who was traveling on Webster Street.

Police said Berube and Kemp live in the area.

Three women in a car behind the Pontiac said Kemp drove through a red light when her car collided with the Mitsubishi, flipping it.

“The car just flew right up into the air and came down hard,” said Gina Oakes of Jay, who was in the car behind Kemp’s.

“I’ve never seen anything like this – only on television,” said Jeanne Oakes, a passenger in that car.

Berube and Kemp were taken to Central Maine Medical Center.

By late Friday night, both had been released, according to a nursing supervisor.

The 4:45 p.m. crash brought traffic to a halt at the busy intersection as emergency crews arrived and dozens of pedestrians clogged the sidewalks. Several said they came running when they heard the collision.

“It sounded like a gunshot,” said a man who lives in the area and who identified himself only as James.

“It was really loud.”

Police were continuing to investigate the crash Friday night.
