KINGFIELD – The results of the second phase of an environmental study of the Joneco property on West Kingfield Road will be reviewed during a public hearing at the selectmen’s meeting at 6 p.m. Monday at Webster Hall.
The former wood products facility, which is now owned by Richard Keenan, has been studied to determine what activities occurred therte that could pose environmental concerns.
“There is some contamination on the site. It’s a small area that’s pretty well contained around one building,” said Ferg Lea of Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments. Janet Pelletier of AVCOG will present the findings during the hearing.
The site is one of five being tested as potentially hazardous. The study is being paid for through a $200,000 Environmental Protection Agency grant awarded in 2005.
The other sites are located in Mexico, West Paris and two in Norway. All are known as “brownfields,” which the EPA defines as property that may have hazardous substances, pollutants or contaminants” that would complicate any potential expansion, redevelopment or reuse.
During a public hearing after completion of the first phase, participants also discussed possible future use of the property, Lea said. The discussion will continue Monday to develop ideas for reuse that the developer can then think about.
The area falls within the town’s tax-increment financing district, Administrative Assistant Greg Davis said. The district extends beyond the Poland Spring Water Co. plant, making this property appropriate for commercial development to be considered under the agreement.
