PORTLAND (AP) – Former first lady Barbara Bush and Gov. John Baldacci were on hand as Maine Medical Center dedicated a new center that will be home to its women and infants’ services.

The ceremony Saturday ended with Bush taking part in the cutting of a 130-foot ribbon wrapped around the front of the East Tower. Bush led the fundraising for the $170 million project.

The 190,000-square-foot building in Portland includes units for prenatal care, labor, delivery, neonatal intensive care and mother and baby units. It will also be the future location of an expanded emergency department.

More than 500 hospital employees will work in the East Tower.
