CARRABASSETT VALLEY – A theft of about 1,000 pounds of copper cable from a Sugarloaf Mountain maintenance shed was discovered Wednesday morning, said police Chief Scott Nichols.

Police estimated the value of the copper at between $6,000 and $10,000.

Electrical workers discovered the loss of the coiled 1-inch cable used for heavy duty electrical work. It was being stored to use for upgrades on mountain equipment, he said.

Because the coil is so big and heavy, Nichols believes there had to be more than one person involved, and they’re probably people familiar with the mountain who would have known that the cable was being stored at the shed on Iron Brook Road.

It is believed the cable was taken within the past two weeks, he said.

Police plan to check with recycling areas in Oakland, Bangor and Portland to see if anyone has tried to turn the cable in for reimbursement.

Anyone with any information is asked to call the Carrabassett Valley police at 237-3200.
