Today is the seventh anniversary of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Milestone anniversaries are generally observed at one year, at five years and every five years thereafter. So, today is not a milestone anniversary, except that it is.
When it comes to the attacks of Sept. 11, which struck deep into Americans’ hearts and souls, there will never be an insignificant anniversary, not just because of the death toll from that day, but also because of how the attacks forever changed this nation.
There are a number of organized memorials today in our communities, which we are certain will be well-attended. But those who can’t make it to one of these events, for whatever reason, can observe the anniversary as well as anyone.
A collective moment of silence this morning, no matter how we individually may feel about the war on terror, is an appropriate gesture in remembrance of that day. That attack. That milestone.
