LIVERMORE – Herbert A. Johnson, 80, a resident of Butter Hill Road in Livermore, died Thursday, Sept. 11, at his home with his daughter by his side.

He was born on Oct. 24, 1927, in Tracy City, Tenn., the son of Eddie and Bessie Lila Belle (Byers) Johnson. He was drafted in 1946 into the Army Air Corps and sent immediately to Japan. This was where he met his wife Kimi Kobayashi. Together they had two children, George Johnson and Linda Sue (Johnson) Goodwin. Mrs. Johnson passed away in 1958.

He served in Korea during World War II, and also served during the Vietnam war. In 1961, he married Rowena Mae Guiggey and together had two children, Mark L. and Adam M. Johnson. She passed away in July 2007. He retired in 1966, after having served 20 years in the U.S. Air Force and settled in Portsmouth, N.H.

He worked as manager of Albert’s Clothing Store for men in Portsmouth, N.H., after his retirement. He also retired from civil service from Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. Herb was active in his church, the Kittery Point Baptist Church, where he was a Sunday school teacher and also served as deacon and head of deacons.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and past master of the George Washington Lodge in Spain. In June of this year, he moved from Portsmouth, N.H., to his mobile home on the horse farm of his daughter and her husband. He loved to watch the horses through his windows. He enjoyed beekeeping, gardening, woodcarving, especially ducks. He loved animals and his special friend was his cat “Meow Meow” who passed away and his cat “Mrs. Potts.”

He is survived by his children, George Johnson (Major, retired USAF) and his wife, Jeanne, of San Antonio, Texas, Linda Sue (Johnson) Goodwin and her husband, Frank Goodwin, (CM/Sgt. retired USAF) of Livermore, Mark Lamberth Johnson and his wife, Linda, of Richmond, Va., and Adam Johnson and his wife, Sherri, of South Carolina; a granddaughter, Kimi Diana Johnson, who is attending grad school in Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minn.

He was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Kimi (Kobayashi) Johnson; a brother, Lloyd F. Johnson; a sister, Narva Owens; and his wife, Rowena Mae (Guiggey) Johnson.
