MILO (AP) – The state fire marshal’s office is investigating an early morning fire that burned several businesses in downtown Milo.
The fire broke out around 3:30 a.m. Sunday in a Main Street building and spread to other downtown businesses. According to Gov. John Baldacci, at least five businesses were damaged and at least a third of the town’s downtown area was burned.
Leon Brown of the Milo Fire Department said the fire started in a building that housed a recently opened restaurant. It then spread to adjacent builidings that housed a hardware store, a game room/billiard hall, a closed flower shop, an abandoned movie theater and some apartments.
There were no injuries reported.
Firefighters from at least 10 towns were called to put out the blaze. Milo is located in Piscataquis County about 20 miles northwest of Bangor.
The governor said specialists from Department of Economic and Community Development will be sent to Milo to help the town and businesses recover.
