LEWISTON – A Portland teenager died over the weekend after falling from a third-floor porch on Spruce Street.

Police said Eva Cordero, 18, died after suffering head injuries in the early Friday morning fall that also left a local man with broken bones.

Police are investigating the fall. Cordero and 31-year-old Marty Paige plunged nearly 20 feet from the porch at Spruce and Knox streets.

Paige suffered broken bones and other injuries. He was treated at Central Maine Medical Center and released.

When police arrived on Spruce Street about 1:15 a.m. Friday, they found a group of people around Cordero, who was unconscious and not breathing on her own.

Cordero was taken to CMMC where she was kept alive into the weekend. She died at the hospital.

Police want to know what caused Cordero and Paige to fall and what was going on at the apartment where the porch is located.

“It appears they were horsing around up there, but we don’t know exactly what caused them to fall,” said police spokesman Lt. Michael McGonagle.

The porch is 16 feet from the ground, but it appeared the pair fell over the railing, which is two feet higher.

Some witnesses said a group of people had been on the porch earlier Thursday night and that some were being dangled over the railing by a man. It was not known if Cordero was among that group.

Police said they are continuing to speak with witnesses about the fall and that they will forward their findings to the District Attorney’s Office.
