WEST PARIS – Norman D. Thurston, 81, a lifelong resident of Rumford, died Monday, Sept. 15, at the Ledgeview Living Center, with his family at his side.

He was born on July 4, 1927, in Rumford, the son of the late Anthony Glover and Esther (Howard) Thurston. He graduated from Stephens High School in 1945.

He proudly served his country in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserves during World War II.

He worked as a self-employed carpenter for most of his adult life.

He was a member of the Napoleon Ouellette, Post 24, American Legion and the Robert Shand, Post 1641, VFW.

He is survived by his wife of 53 yeas, Frances (Welch) Thurston; daughters, Pauline Thurston and Joanne Gaudet and her husband, Tom; son, Kirk Thurston and his wife, Trish; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Barbara Thurston.
