MECHANIC FALLS – Lots of information on the benefits of managing solid waste will be available when the Sanitary District offers tours and discussions at its facility Saturday, Sept. 20. It will be held from 9 a.m. to noon at 56 Lewiston St.

The Mechanic Falls Sanitary District manages its biosolids by applying them on local farmland.

Part of an effort around New England, the Celebrate Clean Water tours will focus on the benefits of wastewater treatment management. More than half of the sewage sludge produced in northern New England and Massachusetts is recycled, saving landfill space and supplying nutrients and organic matter to soils. Some of it is even used to generate electricity and heat.
