LEWISTON – Oscar E. Gammon, 75, of Buckfield, died Friday, Sept. 19, at Central Maine Medical Center.

He was born in Hartford, on July 3, 1933, the son of James G. and Doris Beck Gammon. He graduated from Buckfield High School and faithfully served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict.

He worked for W.H. Hinman from 1959 to 1968, then joined the Local Union No. 4 I.O.U.E., where he drove heavy equipment until 1988. He then became a business agent for the Local No. 4 for Maine and eastern New Hampshire, from which he retired in 1989.

He married Elsie Emily Lowell on May 25, 1956. In 1966, he joined the Evening Star Lodge 147 AF & AM, where he served as master in 1971, and served on multiple committees. He was a member of the American Legion Post 58 in Buckfield for 18 years. He was a member of the Bouncing Bogey Snowmobile Club and was an avid hunter.

He loved the outdoors and was the go-to guy. In 2000, he traveled to Alaska to hunt caribou. He had been president of the Lowell Cemetery Association since 1989. He was a member of the town of Buckfield budget committee from 1975 to 1979, assessor from 1997 to present, selectman from 1997 to 2006 and 2007 to present and road commissioner from 2006 to present.

He is survived by his daughters, Bethany Gammon of Buckfield and Eileen Hotham and her husband, Kendall Jr., of Mechanic Falls; a grandson, Christopher Hotham; four sisters, Jeannette O’Neil of Sumner, Barbara McDonald and her husband, Douglas, of Jay, Martha Dunn and her companion, Bill Harmon, of Sumner and Dorothy Brown and her husband, James, of Sumner; two brothers-in-law, Frank Lowell and his wife, Beatrice, of Newry and Howard Lowell and his wife, Amanda Dempsey, of Harpswell; four sisters-in-law, Charlotte Warren and her husband, Walter, of Buckfield, Edith Lowell of Buckfield, Vasselius Gammon of Sumner and Norma Carter of Turner; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife in January of this year; three brothers, James, Theodore and Francis Gammon; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Heikkinen and Julia Cooper; and a brother-in-law, Ralph Lowell.
