LEWISTON – It was hard to tell which was brighter: The smile on Phillip Wright’s face, or the light bulbs on the scoreboard telling everyone he’d faced 21 shots.

“That was great,” Wright said before hopping on the ice to mingle with skating fans. “The boys did a great job in front of me tonight, and it felt good.”

Wright stopped 20 of those 21 shots, the defense blocked at least a dozen more and the offense got into the game with a four-spot to lead the Lewiston Maineiacs to a 4-1 win over the Shawinigan Cataractes in front of 2,396 at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee on Saturday.

“They competed hard and they made a commitment,” Maineiacs’ coach and GM Ed Harding said. “That’s why we won this hockey game. They got in the shooting lanes. They have to understand what it’s going to take to win at this level every game.”

The win is the team’s first at home on the young season, and its second overall, lifting the Maineiacs’ record to 2-2. Wright was playing in his first regular-season game after being invited to Lewiston’s training camp this summer.

“I have to keep working harder in practice now,” Wright said. “I love competition.”

The defense in front of Wright swarmed shooters all night, turning back shot after shot, particularly through a series of penalty kills in the second period.

“They gave a clinic on blocking shots,” Shawinigan coach Eric Veilleux said. “I don’t think we helped ourselves very much by shooting at them all night.”

Marc Bourgeois joined Lucas Labelle atop the Maineiacs’ scoring chart, energizing the crowd early with a rebound goal at 1:24 of the opening frame. The flurry punctuated a hard-hitting start to the teams’ second game in as many nights.

“The boys paid the price tonight,” Bourgeois said. “We got in the shooting lanes, and we definitely weren’t in the box as much as (Friday) night.”

But the Maineiacs did make a few token trips to the sin bin.

After killing off three penalties, Lewiston struck again as it continued to play solid defense in its own zone. Billy Lacasse partially blocked a Shawinigan shot at the blue line. Seeing it trickle to Lewiston defenseman Michael Ward, Lacasse took off through the center zone. Ward fed him with a breakout pass, and Lacasse beat goalkeeper Erwin Bosum with a flip backhand for his second of the season.

The Cataractes struck back on their fourth power play of the period, though, as Dave Labrecque converted on a feed from Nicholas Peterson at 16:35.

In the second, Michael Chaput scored his first career goal at the 4:20 mark, snapping a wrister low from the middle of the slot that beat Bosum short side.

Matt Bourdeau tacked on the Maineiacs’ fourth goal later in the second on a rush up the right side thanks to a feed from Etienne Brodeur, who had a pair of assists and was a plus-3 despite playing for just 35 minutes due to a game misconduct penalty late in the second frame.

Lewiston next plays Friday, Sept. 26 at home against the Moncton Wildcats.
