TURNER – Upcoming classes for the Upper Androscoggin Collaborative, which comprises SAD 52 Adult and Community Education of Greene, Leeds and Turner and SAD 36 of Livermore and Livermore Falls, include adult, child and infant CPR.

The five-week course will begin Thursday, Oct. 2, and provide the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and help injured or suddenly ill persons until more advanced emergency help arrives. It includes injury and illness prevention information and activities designed to help people make appropriate choices.

The second session of driver education will begin Monday, Oct. 6. It consists of 30 hours of classroom instruction along with 10 hours of driving. Students must be at least age 15 on the first day.

Dog obedience will start Wednesday, Oct. 8. Correction of behavioral problems will be offered. Rabies shots must be current.

A one-night workshop, “Demystifying Forks,” will be held Wednesday, Oct. 8. The class will teach the etiquette of formal dining.

Microsoft Power Point class will commence Monday, Oct. 13. It is a good refresher course.

Also starting Oct. 13, Microsoft Windows will give an overview of Microsoft programs.

Advanced placement test prep, beginning Tuesday, Oct. 14, is a course designed for learners who have or plan to apply to a college or university. AP credits fulfill college requirements, allowing more room in a schedule for electives or a double major. It will cover material and strategies for the AP English language and composition test.

“Topics in Literature”will also begin Oct. 14. Students will discuss mankind’s works of science fiction. Works will include a selection of short stories and a choice of novel. Students will learn to identify and discuss the message in science fiction writing, examine motive and outcome and compose an essay on their interpretation.

“Create a Moss-Covered Flower Pot” in a one-night craft workshop to be held Wednesday, Oct. 15. Cover a piece of cardboard with dried moss, making it into a vase that can be filled with dried flowers.

Quit Smoking with Hypnosis will start Monday, Oct. 20, for people who want to eliminate smoking “cold turkey.” The first class eliminates the desire and the second class 48 hours later reinforces the hypnotic suggestions. Students should bring water, a mat or blanket and pillow.

Chemistry will start Wednesday, Oct. 22. Laboratory activities will be a major part of the course as well as long-term projects and inquiry-based problem-solving.
