AUBURN – City crews and a phalanx of people performing community service will close the Mechanics Row garage Saturday and Sunday.
“We have about 30 men and 12 or so ladies, and we’ll go in top to bottom,” said Leroy Walker, the city’s parks superintendent. “We’ll get all the lights, the windows, the railings and all of the parking stalls, too.”
Walker said the city is also renting a high-pressure sprayer to scrub oil and other stains from the floor.
The garage will be closed to parking beginning at 7 a.m. Saturday. Work is scheduled to wrap up by 4 p.m. Sunday.
Walker said the city is only paying for the cleaning equipment and materials. The workers are all people required to perform community service according to the county courts.
“We wouldn’t be able to do this kind of a cleaning to this level if we had to pay all those people,” Walker said. “This is the only time of year we have this kind of manpower available.”
