LEWISTON – Joseph Stanley Stankus, 90, of Lewiston, died peacefully on Sunday, Sept. 21, at d’Youville Pavilion.
He was born in Chicago, Ill., on Aug. 17, 1918, a son of Joseph and Sophie Stankus. He graduated from Kelly High School in Chicago, Ill., and became a photo engraver apprentice after high school. World War II started and he served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945. He was stationed in France and England and while in England married his loving wife, Bridget Durkin, in London, England, on June 10, 1944. They lived in Chicago for 36 years while raising their family.
He worked as a photo engraver finisher and was a member of the Graphic Communications International Union. He retired to Lewiston in 1982, with his wife Bridget and sister-in-law, Mary E. Durkin.
He is survived by a daughter, Maureen LaChapelle and her husband, Roger, of Lewiston: two sons, Brian Stankus and his wife, Denise, of Burlington, Wis., and Michael Stankus and his wife, Wendy, of Beverly Farms, Mass.: his sister, Evelyn Ozelis of Chicagol a sister-in-law, Mary E. Durkin of Lewiston; 10 grandchildren, Jennifer LaChapelle Renna and her husband, Kevin, of Beverly Mass., Katie LaChapelle of Cambridge, Mass., Megan Stankus of Chicago, Ill., Mary Stankus of Burlington, Wis., Brianne Stankus of Burlington, Wis., Elizabeth Stankus of Beverly Farms, Mass., Caroline Stankus of Beverly Farms, Mass., Krista Stankus of Burlington, Wis., Ryan Stankus of Burlington, Wis., and Joshua Stankus of Burlington, Wisc.; one great-grandson, Gavin Renna of Beverly, Mass.; and two nephews, Kazy and Joseph Ozelis of Chicago, Ill.
He was predeceased by his wife, Bridget Durkin Stankus on Aug. 2.
