BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) – The University of Vermont is going green in the school’s bathrooms.
Starting Oct. 1, the school will only use toilet tissue made from 100 percent recycled fiber that has been bleached without chlorine and approved by an independent green certification group.
The switch was prompted by a one-semester campaign led by the student group called the Forest Crimes Unit.
The students felt the traditional toilet tissue was made with pulp harvested in Canada’s old-growth forests.
The university uses 32 tons of toilet paper a year.
The students used protests, humor, research and negotiation to persuade the school to switch.
And to boot, the environmentally sound tissue is about $2.35 a case less expensive.
