PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – Roger Williams University is honoring Beat Generation author Jack Kerouac by offering a partial scholarship to a student from his hometown of Lowell, Massachusetts.

The Bristol school will offer a one-year, $14,000, half-tuition scholarship to a student to study creative writing or journalism.

The money will be awarded in conjunction with an annual foot race in honor of the “On The Road” author.

The university says its president Roy Nirschel, a self-professed Kerouac fan, has run the 5K race before.

This year, the race will be held Sept. 28 in Lowell’s Kerouac Park.
