Would the Lewiston Police Department like to hand out speeding tickets like candy at Halloween?

Would they like to save some lives?

Then they should send their cruisers down to East Avenue in front of Montello School at about 7:40 a.m. each and every school morning. It seems somebody has forgotten this year to remind the general public that school is in session and to slow down, although most of the speeding is done by the parents and the school buses.

My son walks to Montello each morning, one of only about a dozen kids out of 850 who do so (which is another sad commentary).

Even though there are so few walkers, that is no excuse for driving 35-40 mph in a 15 mph zone on East Avenue, or 25 mph in a 10 mph zone in the school driveway. Each and every morning, I observe this dangerous race course around the school, with fewer than five vehicles out of 50 driving the speed limit.

The morning of Sept. 17 was veiled in a dense fog, with visibility of maybe 30 yards in front of the school, but it didn’t slow anyone down. I guess it is a good thing that so few walk to school anymore. There might have been some dead children in the roadway that morning.
